It is expected that Ubon Ratchathani will open the world’s largest 45-megawatt floating solar farm in June 2021.
The firm that will construct and engineer this solar farm is B. Grimm Place. They signed a contract with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and they will also act as a procurement agent for the farm. They will develop photovoltaic solar panels valued at 842 million baht for the dam that is near the solar farm.
Above-ground solar farms require 450 rai of land in order to develop enough power.
This project was originally supposed to start in December 2020 but was delayed by the pandemic.
The solar farm is 82% finished according to Chatchai Mawong, the EGAT in charge of renewable and hydro energy plant development. The first floating solar panels had been installed in December.
Hydropower is partly used to generate energy at this floating solar farm os it is considered to be a hybrid system.
EGAT has a development plan in place since 2018 that calls for building solar farms at all nine of its dams within the next 20 years. They want these solar farms to have combined capacities of 2.72 Mx. They also want to employ an energy storage system and modern energy management system. These parts are important for solar farms to be successful.
EGAT also has reservoirs and they are planning to build natural walkways to help attract tourists.
