Thais and Expats Can Soon Try The COVID-19 Samui Plus Plan

July 7, 2021

Registration begins this week for Thais to enter Thailand under the reopening scheme, Samui Plus. In a similar way to the Phuket “Sandbox,” the program will allow foreign tourists who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 to visit the three islands in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Surat Thani. Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, and Koh Tao will reopen on July 15 under the scheme.
According to the National News Bureau of Thailand, before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can begin registering for the Certificates of Entry (COE), a subcommittee of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration must approve the “Samui Plus” scheme. This week, the scheme is up for approval.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s governor, Yuthasak Supasorn, says 1,000 foreign tourists are expected to visit in the first 30 days of the reopening scheme, generating at least 100 million baht, according to the government’s news bureau. There are more restrictions under the “Samui Plus” model, so tourism officials expect fewer visitors than Phuket. There were 1,416 foreign arrivals in the first 4 days of the PhuketSandbox.
Under the Samui Plus model, tourists who have been vaccinated must remain on Koh Samui for the first seven days of their stay. On their first day on the island, tourists will be tested for Covid-19. For the first three days, they must stay at their hotel or resort. During the rest of the week, they can travel on a “sealed route,” most likely with a tour guide to specific destinations and on excursions.
Visitors can travel freely to Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao after a week on Koh Samui and a negative Covid-19 test. Tourists can travel throughout Thailand after 14 days and a negative Covid-19 test.
