The Editorial Management At IGN GIves Details About Why They Pulled Story About Getting Financial Help For Palestinians

May 28, 2021

IGN’s editorial management took responsibility for pulling a story raising money for Palestinians wounded in recent Israeli attacks, according to Vice Waypoint.

In response to an open letter signed by more than 80 IGN employees, who called the retraction a clear example of corporate overreach, Management received a memo from IGN chief content officer Peter Schneider.

In the memo, he noted that he discussed the post with IGN publisher John Davison and an unnamed boss, but he took responsibility for the decision. (About half of the editorial team signed the open letter, but not Schneider or Davison.)

According to him, the original publication of the post was evidence of the editorial team’s process failure.

An editorial ombudsman should work with management and staff to revamp the editorial process to prevent similar occurrences in the future while protecting editorial independence.

Vice Waypoint reports that IGN has taken responsibility for last week’s decision to pull a story raising money for Palestinians injured in Israeli attacks.

IGN chief content officer Peter Schneider responded to an open letter signed by over 80 employees (as of this writing) by calling the retraction of the article a clear case of corporate overreach.

In the memo, he noted that he discussed the post with IGN publisher John Davison and an unnamed boss, but he took responsibility for the decision. (Approximately three-quarters of the editorial team signed, but neither Schneider nor Davison.)

The original publication of the post he cited as evidence of editorial failure.

Schneider added that he wanted a third-party editorial ombudsman to work with management and staff to restructure the editorial process to prevent similar incidents in the future.
