Head Monk In Myanmar Travels With Head Of Myanmar Military To Russia , People Think It Means That He Supports Military Now

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s favorite monk Sitagu Sayadaw is accompanying the junta’s No. 2 man on his current trip to Russia, seemingly confirming the popular opinion that he is close to the junta leaders.
Major General Zaw Min Tun confirmed the monk is traveling with Vice Senior General Soe Win, who is now in Moscow for the closing ceremony of the International Army Games-2021. Both of them left for Russia on Wednesday.
We do not know why the monk went to Moscow. A Buddhist monk’s sudden trip to Moscow this time of year is quite an anomaly since religious clerics generally do not travel until the end of the fast next month.
The spokesperson told The Press that the 84-year-old monk is now staying at the Myanma Theravada Buddha Vihara Monastery in Moscow, to which Min Aung Hlaing and his wife, among others, donated.
In the eyes of his former followers, Ashin Nyanissara, a monk also known as Ashin Nyanissara, has fallen into disrepute due to his near-total silence on Min Aung Hlaing’s deadly crackdowns.
Despite the fact that many young Buddhist monks were taking to the streets nearly every day against the regime, Sitagu Sayadaw always welcomed Min Aung Hlaing and his wife at his monastery at Sagaing Hill. Sitagu Sayadaw was present in March when Min Aung Hlaing took blessings from Myanmar’s senior monks for the construction of the world’s largest Buddha statue in Naypyitaw. Across the country, nearly five dozen protesters were killed by the regime’s troops.
Min Aung Hlaing publicly wished then-President U Thein Sein would be re-elected while the quasi-civilian government led by former generals was in power from 2011 to early 2016.
Some have seen him sitting on the fence since then.
