COVID-19 Is Slowing Down Myanmar Military

At least two soldiers from Myaung Township, Sagaing Region, died after contracting COVID-19, according to the township’s People’s Defense Force (PDF).
The Junta has conducted raids in Sagaing and Magwe regions since last week, and two units arrived in Myaung Township on Saturday.
The Irrawaddy reports that 50 out of 60 junta members are sick. A PDF member replied, “They have been sick since they entered our township without boats. The government won’t feed them and they can’t get medicine. We heard two of them died and one is on oxygen. We suspect COVID-19.”
After junta raids, thousands of villagers fled to the east of the township, along the Ayeyarwady River, and to the west, along the Chindwin River.
Soldiers who stole chickens for food had no help. They may be infected with Coronavirus. A military unit with sick soldiers is still in Nabet, but another has retreated to a camp,” villagers said.
Junta forces have been raiding villages in Tabayin, Mingin, Myaung, Yinmabin, and Kani townships in Sagaing and Yesagyo and other townships in Magwe, attacking resistance bases, detaining civilians, and looting. They also reportedly used residents as human shields when raiding villagers.
