Two Gaming Companies Do Not Agree About Whether They Made Money From Outriders

The developer of Outriders claims that Square Enix has not paid any royalties despite the publisher announcing the game’s successful launch earlier this year.
Outriders had a troubled launch in April this year, it’s fair to say. The players were experiencing connection problems. There were also reports that some players were not satisfied with the endgame content. It wasn’t a great start for a live-service game.
In spite of its troubles, Square Enix stated that Outriders would become the next major franchise after a “successful” launch.
At launch, Outriders had 3.5 million players, which is quite impressive. In spite of reports of success, the developers claim they have not received royalties since Outriders did not generate profits.
If an online game generates around 3.5 million unique players in its first month, surely it makes a profit? It may also be the case in many other cases. The launch of Outriders on Xbox Game Pass probably contributed to a significant portion of the online player numbers.
In an investor note, People Can Fly claimed that the developers would only receive royalties after Square Enix had recouped all costs associated with the game. Fair enough, this is a normal business practice. In the end, it wouldn’t be wise to pay out bonuses before a product has made a profit.

In addition, he discussed how Square Enix’s publishing deals and distribution methods on various platforms could impact revenue and payment schedules.
Wojciechowski says “[The lack of royalties] could be determined by some elements of Square Enix’s sales policy, details of which are unknown, such as partnerships with distribution platforms or companies offering the Outriders game as a separate product.”
