US Has Arrested Two Myanmar Citizens For Plotting To Attack The UN Ambassador of Myanmar

Two Myanmar citizens have been charged with plotting to attack the UN ambassador of Myanmar, Kyaw Moe Tun, an outspoken supporter of democracy who has refused orders to resign from the military government.
In an alleged conspiracy foiled by US investigators, the pair discussed hiring assailants to force Kyaw Moe Tun to resign or to kill him if he refused, officials said recently.
According to Audrey Strauss, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, the pair planned to seriously injure or kill Myanmar’s ambassador to the UN in a planned attack on American soil.
Jacqueline Maguire, acting assistant director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, said law enforcement acted “quickly and diligently” after learning of the potential assassination planned in Westchester County, New York, north of New York City.
She explained that “our laws apply to everyone in our country, and these men will now face the consequences of allegedly breaking those laws.”
In a federal court in Westchester, NY, Phyo Hein Htut, 28, and Ye Hein Zaw, 20, were being charged with counts for which they could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government was overthrown on February 1 by the military in Myanmar, which Phyo Hein Htut was connected to. The arms dealer had business with the Myanmar military.
Phyo Hein Htut and the arms dealer discussed hiring assailants, a criminal complaint said.
Ye Hein Zaw also discussed the plot and sent Phyo Hein Htut $4,000 as an advance payment for the hit, it said.
Myanmar’s UN representative Kyaw Moe Tun – who made headlines after the coup for flashing the three-finger salute of democracy protesters from his UN chair – told AFP news agency on Wednesday that he was under threat and was receiving additional security.
More than 900 people have been killed in Myanmar as the military tries to crush protests against the coup, according to a local monitoring group.
