The Thai Public Health Ministry Mulling Targeted Lockdown and New Color Coding For COVID-19

In an effort to identify provinces most at risk of the latest Covid-19 outbreak, the Public Health Ministry has proposed targeted lockdown measures and a new colour-coding system.

According to Dr Kiattiphum Wongrajit, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, on Sunday, April 25th,2921 the Public Health Emergency Operation Centre called an emergency meeting in response to the severity of the latest outbreak of Covid-19.

Thailand recorded 11 new deaths in April, including one from a pregnant woman, bringing the tally to 140. The government recorded 2,438 new coronavirus cases in April, all but five locally contracted. This increases the tally from the outbreak to 55,460.

The public health minister announced at the meeting that zoning systems based on updated color coding would be adopted by provinces affected by Covid-19.

Covid-19 infections are currently visualized using the colors red, orange, yellow, and green.

The orange zone is the second-highest control zone, followed by the yellow high surveillance zone, while the green surveillance zone covers provinces without infection.

Dr Kiattiphum said that there will only be three colour codes under the new system — dark red for special, maximum control, and red and orange for current situations.

All 77 provinces will be asked to adopt targeted lockdown measures to restrict large crowd gatherings.

The proposals will be reviewed by the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the Thai minister for public health minister said.

The meeting also stressed the need for more hospital beds in Bangkok, saying it was a pressing issue.
